Barrier-Free Building is construction for children and adults with special needs, handicap accessibility, and aging-in-place remodeling in southeast Michigan. We build and modify residential and commercial property using Universal Design solutions which are accessible, functional, and safe for people of all abilities.

Construction for handicap accessibility and disability home remodeling is our core business separating us from most Michigan builders. We build and install wheelchair ramps, widen doorways, remodel bathrooms, build roll-in showers, modify kitchens and make many other home and office modifications. We have full service capability from design/development to construction of new custom homes.

We can remodel your home for accessibility throughout the residence for safe independent living for elderly, senior living, children, and those with a disability. As a professional accessibility contractor and design-build remodeler we incorporate ADA design and ADA building codes where possible in residential renovations, although it’s not required by law. Whether you are remodeling for a disability such as wheelchair accessibility or are planning on aging in place let us help you with a free evaluation.

Provide safe entry / exits

  • People must be able to safely enter and exit from the residence and disabled access is necessary for those living with a disability.
  • Provide barrier-free entries, without steps, by changing landscape grade, building a ramp and/or installing a lift.
  • Widen doorways for walker and wheelchair accessibility.
  • Install low-profile door thresholds.
  • Install or build threshold ramps.
  • Install inexpensive automatic door openers. operated by switches or remote control.
  • Change out hardware to lever style door handles and easy to grasp locks.

Make general accessibility modifications

  • Change out or install paddle switches throughout and use illuminated paddle switches in entryway, bedroom, hallways, kitchen and other areas where one may be entering a dark room.
  • Improve lighting and install night lighting.
  • Relocate all switches and electrical outlets, thermostats, keypads, and intercoms for easier access.
  • Relocate laundry room.
  • Reconfigure closets and storage spaces for access.
  • Eliminate all steps throughout the dwelling.
  • Install smooth anti-skid flooring and/or low-nap carpeting with thin pad underneath.
  • Install blinds that are easy to operate manually or controlled electronically by switch or remote.
  • Build additions for bedrooms, suites, and accessible bath or shower.

Improve safety with home automation

  • Install programmable thermostat.
  • Install security systems.
  • Install remote / touch-screen lighting controls.
  • Incorporate timer devices to automatically turn lights on/off and outlets on/off.
  • Install exterior motion-detector lighting for safety.
  • Install remote or fingerprint activated door lock(s) installed to eliminate the use of keys for those with dexterity problems.
